Hurricane Irene
Hi Capt Lim,
We are due to fly home from Miami to London Heathrow on Thursday at 20.40hrs.
Will the plane take off due to Hurricane Irene?
Amanda
Hi Amanda,
The approaching of Hurricane Irene will be closely monitored by the Metrological Office and the airlines concerned. If they forecast that the hurricane will affect the safety of the flight, then the plane will not take off until it has passed over the airport at Miami.
If the wind is below the limitation for a plane to take off during the approaching hurricane, it would depart even though it may be a few hundred miles away. Whilst airborne on route to London, your plane may avoid the weather by deviating off the track of the hurricane. It is not dangerous flying in the vicinity of a hurricane except that it may a bit turbulent.
You need not have to worry as the captain is fully aware of the movement of the hurricane and would take all the necessary safety precautions to ensure you arrive safely at London.
Have a safe flight !
