Would a Basair CPL Diploma be acceptable to SIA entry requirement?
Pilot Career - Flying Schools
Written by Capt Lim

Hi Capt Lim

Two  weeks ago we brought our son (17 years, awaiting O level results) to Basair Flying School in Cessnock in Hunter Valley Sydney.

He attended a flying workshop and that inspired him to want to be a pilot. He has the aptitude and passion but academically he is not very strong.

I understand this flying school is internationally known and they offer Diploma and CPL training total duration is 72 weeks.

Kindly advise whether I should send my son directly to this school for his Diploma and CPL, skipping his local Diploma in a Polytechnic in Singapore or should he need a Singapore Diploma then proceed to the flying school to obtain CPL?

To qualify to join SIA, would he need a Singapore Diploma even though he may have a recognized Diploma from Basair?

For your kind advice please. His GCE "O" level results would be out this week and we hope to be able to help him decide.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Best Regards

Siew Cheng

Basair Flying College

Hi Siew Cheng,

Although I know of a few pilots who were trained in Basair at Bankstown, Sydney, I am not sure about the quality of their sister school located at the Hunter Valley. I am rather surprised at some of the reviews from the Flight School Reviewer here

The prerequisite for joining SIA as a cadet pilot is at least a Diploma. As far as I know, the Diploma and CPL from Basair is not equivalent to a Singapore Polytechnic Diploma.

Furthermore, SIA would require a minimum of “A” level and very strong academic background in addition to any licenses.

Please check with CAAS whether the CPL by Basair is recognized in Singapore or else your son may require further expenses converting it into frozen ATPL.

My advice: Get a Diploma in Singapore, then apply to SIA. If he is accepted, you don't even have to spend any money on his training.  If not, it is going to be costly with no guarantee of getting back into SIA except for other low cost carriers.

Kindly read other similar queries in this site.
