Becoming a pilot with Cathay Pacific
Pilot Career - Cathay Pacific Airways
Written by Capt Lim
Sunday, 30 January 2011 13:01

Hi Capt Lim,

I'm currently doing my CPL in the USA but I’m originally from Sri Lanka. I recently came across the Cadet Pilot Program for Cathay Pacific. I was wondering whether a person from any nationality can join that program. If not, is there any other airlines that do that.

Also, if Cathay Pacific does take in pilots from any nationality, what would be the duration of the bond?

Thank you

Derick

Cathay Pacific

Hi Derick,

Cathay does indeed accept International cadets if they do meet their requirements. From their website, the requirements are as follows:-

“To qualify for our Cadet Pilot Program, you must be at least 18 years old and wish to pursue a career with us in Hong Kong. You must be at least 1.6m tall and may be subject to a functional reach test, be physically fit, and possess an excellent command of English.

The minimum educational standards we require are:-
  • 5 passes in Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination / GCSE (O Level) including Physics and Mathematics, together with 2 passes in Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination / GCE A Level, Science subjects preferred OR
  • Passes in Physics and Mathematics to year 10 and completed high school with the required university entrance qualifications, Science subjects preferred OR
  • Hold a degree or diploma in any discipline.”
Besides Cathay Pacific, Etihad Airlines also sponsor International students but I believe it is on hold at the moment and Singapore Airlines (SIA) used to do so from certain countries only. So Cathay Pacific is the best bet at the moment for those who qualify but as you can see from the past articles in this site, getting into this airline is indeed a very tough hurdle.

As regards to the training bond, I think successful candidates are required to sign a 6 years non-binding bond.

For more information you can visit their website here and apply online here

Hi Capt Lim,

I'm currently sailing on merchant ship as navigating officer and very willing to be a pilot from childhood because of my family financial problems i am not able to join, and now i thing this is good time to move, but I’m originally from India. I recently came across the Cadet Pilot Program for Cathay Pacific. I was wondering whether a person from any nationality can join that program. If not, is there any other airlines that do that.

Also, if Cathay Pacific does take in pilots from any nationality, what will be the procedure to apply for it.

Thank you
