Pilot Career - Becoming a Pilot
Friday, 17 December 2010 12:10

Hi Capt Lim,

I'm so glad you had this website up sharing pointers and your experience as a pilot. This is a great source of information and sharing of in-depth view in the industry.

I'm in my mid 20s and have been working in for some years now. I think it has reached to my last straw to draw on the courage and choose a path I've been dreaming of. A wise man once told me, when the day you enjoyed your work, you stopped working. I hope that day comes soon.

I want to become a pilot. When I shared with my peers about my ambition, many said that after the trainee course, you may not even be guaranteed to fly with SIA/Silkair. And to make it worse, you're subjected to 7 years of bond.

I'm in a dilemma upon hearing the news. I'm looking forward to work with a company that I can be proud of and hope to grow with her and share her success.

Does joining the trainee scheme not guarantee one a career as a pilot?

Hope to hear from you soon Capt Lim

Hi Yu,

Yes, I have heard this being quoted by some pilots who said the same thing about once they love the job, they stopped working (not only that, and being paid to travel round the world too).  Ah, in life one wishes for many things but they are fulfilled not by just wishing but through hard work and determination. Hope this inspires you.

Anyway, you know that the global requirement for pilots fluctuates with times. When times are good all newly qualified pilots are snatched up by the airlines and when it is bad, the high investments put in by private pilots bring in very poor return.

At the moment, it is not true that trainees from SIA/Silkair are not guaranteed of a job after graduation. If you are a private trainee, then that would be a different story. What they probably do is to delay your course or else they would not bond you for 7 years and waste so much money on your training.

Wish you all the best.

P.S. My main site is still down due to virus attack by hackers…
