Pilot Career - Becoming a Pilot
Sunday, 17 June 2007 08:17

Dear Captain Lim

First of all, thank you for opening this web site. I have read most of the FAQs on this site and have learnt a lot.

I*m a 17 years old girl from Hong Kong. I lived in South Africa for 5 years but now I*m back to HK. I have just finished my Grade 12 and going to start my first year of University in September. I have always been passionate about flying and would do anything just to become an airline pilot - no, not just a pilot - but a Captain!!

I came back to HK with Grade 10 and then the school thought that I didn*t have to do my grade 11 - so they put me into Grade 12 but since I didn*t sit for any big exams like the HKCEE or HKAC, would Cathay take me after my first year at the University?

I have asked my teachers and they think that once I got into the University, my credits would be more important than the HKAC or HKCEE. What do you think about that?

On the Cathay Pacific Career page, it says:

"To qualify for our Cadet Pilot Program, you must be at least 18 years old and a Hong Kong permanent resident. You must be at least 1.6m tall, be physically fit, and possess an excellent command of English. And 5 passes in HKCEE / GCSE (O Level), including Physics and Mathematics, together with 2 passes in HKAL / GCE A Level, preferably in Science OR a Degree or Diploma in any discipline (or the equivalent educational standard obtained overseas)"

I would have a Diploma when I finish my Grade 12 but I think it*s better if I start University first because I*m 17 right now as I will be 18 when I finished my first year of University!

Thank you so much for reading this!

Jackie

Hi Jackie,

Even though you may enroll in the University, Cathay*s educational requirement is that you still need to have 5 passes in HKCEE / GCSE (O Level), including Physics and Mathematics, together with 2 passes in HKAL / GCE A Level, preferably in Science, if you are non-final year student.

The safest bet is to complete your University education first and then put in your application. Of course, while you are in the University, you can also submit your application and see if the airline would consider your equivalent standard obtained overseas.

Remember, getting into Cathay as a cadet pilot is not just satisfying the minimum qualification. As the competition is very stiff, you have to be more than just that. Its selection process is one of the toughest around. During your interview and aptitude tests, you have to prove your assertiveness, technical aptitude, skills in problem solving, leadership, teamwork, communication (written and oral) and a whole lot of other attributes.

I wish you all the best.
