Pilot Career - Becoming a Pilot
Wednesday, 09 August 2006 10:02

Dear all aspiring pilots,

Since coming back from the four months break (please read my posting in "My last flight on the Boeing 777 from Cairo" I have received more than 180 emails requesting for help and information. Oh boy! That is too much for me to handle alone! If you have not heard from me, kindly accept my sincere apologies.

Anyway, most of the emails that I have received are repeated questions. Many of them can be found in the Pilot Career FAQs in my Website or within the Forums. Please use Search to locate the topic you wish to know. Yes, the Forums (especially Singapore Airlines) are good places to gather all the resources on becoming a pilot.

However, I wish to cover one area that have brought much sorrows to many aspiring pilots who have crossed the difficult hurdles but failed in the final interviews. Yes, so near yet so far away! One related to me on why he was rejected after the Tea Party. He was asked, "How would you react to an inappropriate command if a captain who is less qualified or senior than you, was your boss in the cockpit?" He answered that, if there were a need to kiss the feet of his superior, he would do so! To me, that reply shows the immaturity of the candidate - it was certainly a fatal response! It smacks against the CRM (Cockpit Resources Management) concept. Today, a First Officer is taught to be assertive and not be a yes-man. If he thinks the captain is flouting company safety procedures, he must have the guts to tell him so. Please read an article on
CRM by a friend of mine, Robert J. Boser who is the Editor-in-Chief of AirlineSafety.Com. A good knowledge of CRM would certainly impress the interviewers, especially the senior captain on the board!

Another point, (from what I have read in the Forums or emails) - you may be a newly graduated lawyer, doctor or one highly qualified academically, some major airlines (typically SIA) would also expect to see that you possess a good attitude amongst the other qualities to be a future professional pilot. A good academic background is definitely an advantage but a humble attitude is just as important. Also, remember, candidates attending pilot interview should be smartly dressed. Avoid having your hair dyed, displaying a tattoo somewhere on your body or having a pierced ear with a ring! Do so at your peril!

Kindly accept my apologies again for not being able to answer to those repeated questions below:-

a. Routes to becoming a commercial pilot
b. What subjects to take to become a pilot
c. What is psychomotor test?
d. Medical requirements to be a pilot
e. Am I too old to be a pilot?
f. Can a foreigner and non-citizen apply for the various cadet pilot program in the Asian airlines?
g. Lasik surgery and the pilot, etc, etc.

Please make use of the Forums in my Website. There are many regular visitors that can give you quality answers.
