I’m currently 14 in year 10 (GCSE Exam year) in the UK.
It has been my dream ever since I was 5 years old to become a commercial pilot. About a month ago I flew and landed a plane for the first time (Piper Warrior) and I now know what I want to be when I’m older!
I’m really worried though, for one reason ...in school, and let me explain.
In school I’m a chatty and sometimes a cocky person and I’m getting in trouble a lot at school now (not fights or anything but back chatting to teachers sometimes).
When I’m outside of school I’m a completely different person.
I’m worried this might jeopardize my chance of becoming a commercial pilot.
Please help me Captain Lim!
Matthew
Hi Matthew,
The qualities interviewers would be looking for in a candidate for the position of a commercial pilot would be, amongst others, self-confidence, self-esteem and humility. It is okay to be chatty for that is a sign that you probably have good communication skills – an important attribute - but definitely not being cocky. Cockiness shows that you are boastful and has a low self-esteem.
To be a pilot, one must have the right attitude as well as aptitude. If you are cocky, then you lack the right attitude. If so, then I am afraid it would affect your future career as an airline pilot.
However, these are some advice on how to get rid of some cockiness in you. Basically, do not react too quickly in trying to be defensive when you are among your friends. Learn to listen instead of forcing your viewpoints always. Other people may have some good ideas just as you have yours. Improve your listening skills instead of dominating the discussion.
Now you admitted that you are sometimes cocky, get a good friend to work on your cockiness whenever it arises inside the school. If you can improve on this weakness, I am sure it would help you to your dream of becoming a commercial pilot one day!
So believe in yourself that you can improve in your attitude in life and be a humble person instead of being cocky sometimes!
