Air New Zealand Boeing 777 taking off from Auckland

Hi Capt Lim,

I live in New Zealand and, as with most people who contacted you, I'm rather fascinated by airplanes and aspire to become a commercial pilot, preferably for an airline in Asia - Singapore, Cathay or Malaysia. I have flown on all three of them multiple times and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and dream of the day when I can get up there on the flight deck myself.

And so I wonder, do any of these airlines ever recruit budding, non-resident, pilots like myself to work for them?

I'm 15, have no flight experience yet and so my knowledge on the physical steps to becoming a pilot is quite limited, therefore I'd be greatly appreciative on any information you have on becoming a pilot in any of these three carriers.

I'm highly motivated and look forward to achieving my goal of flying the big birds one day.

Thank You,

Mitch

Hi Mitch,

Being a NZ citizen, your options to join an overseas airline are limited. Only Cathay will take in non -citizens if you can get through their rigorous screening process (see previous posting on this). Singapore and Malaysia is out of the question as you are a non-citizen

My advice: plan to join Air New Zealand, other local air charters or get involved with the general aviation after you have graduated from a local flying school. Build up your experience with sufficient flying hours before you can become marketable overseas in the future.

At the moment, there are many brand new pilots without experience or ratings in the flying job market - all hoping to get into the airlines.

Please read through Pilot Career in my site for more information.
