In-Flight Explanation Part 1

Hi Capt Lim,

I know you get a ton of these questions on a daily basis.

I LOVE to travel, however, I always limit myself to traveling because flying terrifies me. I know it's a mix of fear of heights and having no control over the situation. I can't think of anything worse than free falling or exploding!

I have flown to Europe at least once a year for the past 5 years and instead of looking forward to my trip I spend a month beforehand losing sleep, sweating with anxiety and my heart racing. I even tried Xanax for one trip and my body literally fought through the Xanax.

My mom keeps telling me not to take these trips if this is what it does to me. That makes me sad as I know I'd miss out on so much in life.

However, I am not sure if it's worth it anymore as my body is literally spent by the time I even step foot on the flight. The entire flight I am tensed and sweaty and terrified.

Is there anything you can say that can help me? Maybe statics or anything?

Thank you.

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Sure, I receive tons of these questions so often that I will have to refer you to one of my previous answer here.

Fear
To tell you the truth, when I first started flying, I too was afraid. I have flown at least 50 times just in the past 11 years. I know what all the sounds are and I know that crashes are rare. You are most likely going to die in a car crash rather than a plane crash. Think of all the advantages of flying and think of the pilot as your friend. He knows what he is doing. Most plane crashes are caused by errors with maintnence. A lot of which are fixed now that they have learned from their mistakes.
