Air France 447: Final report on what brought airliner down

Hi Capt Lim,

Please let me understand the following if someone knows: Given that the autopilot detected the pitot tube failure, why it didn’t follow the standard procedure? (Adjust the angle of attack and put the engine power to the right level?)

What the documentary states is that it just disengaged

Dionisis

Hi Dionisis,

The autopilot is designed to disengage if it senses conflicting information.

The main function of the pitot tube is to sense a differential pressure and come out with the correct airspeed. When the pitot tube is blocked, it will give a false reading telling the pilot that the speed is very high when in fact it is low and on the verge of dropping out of the sky!

Yes the Airbus A330 has an ‘alpha floor protection’ whereby power would be applied to correct any abnormal angle of attack and prevent the plane from crashing.

Unfortunately, this will only work in ‘normal law’ and not when it is in that ‘abnormal law’ state because of some other technical failures.

if the airplane is in normal law that couldn't be happens but it was in degraded mode so his flight envelope could be affected by stall, excidind bank angle, overspeed and other... when the attitude indicator (as in 330) doesn't present the effective angle of attack but only the attitude of the aircraft this is another aspect to considerate because you can stall without have any symptom.

I still have a hard time trusting air france. What bothers me the most is that there were two co-pilots leading the airplane and the experienced pilot was away. Weren't there supposed to be two pilots and two co-pilots so that 1 pilot would always be present? For me such negligence is unforgivable...
